Immaterial Figures and Forces

Cameron Jamie's exhibition "Immaterial Figures and Forces" presents approximately thirty drawings created between 2024 and 2026. These works, executed on Arches paper with ink, oil, and pigment, are presented as a journal rather than a series, reflecting a daily, ritualistic practice without a predetermined agenda. The drawings feature a coexistence of human figures, animals, objects, masks, and natural forms, suggesting a continuum where conventional categories blur.

Jamie's process involves building, destroying, and rebuilding on the paper, utilizing washes, rinsing, and the pressure of the pen to reveal the paper's texture. This method, influenced by his ceramic practice and Surrealist automatic drawing, treats the paper as a living material. The resulting images register the passage of energy and forces in action, with recurring motifs like the eye serving as a sign of life. The artist's physical engagement—his fatigue and impatience—leaves a legible trace, emphasizing the construction of a grounded reality over the depiction of dreams.
