In This Time

For his second exhibition at the gallery, Nick Mauss presents a new body of work on the second floor of 10 rue Charlot. Over the past two decades, Mauss has developed a practice that defies categorization and rejects hierarchy between mediums, connecting painting, gesture, memory, and spatial concerns with writing, performance, and presentation modes.

This exhibition features Mauss's process of reversed paintings on mirrored glass, scaled to the viewer's perspective. Enclosed within closed volumes, these works appear as devices reflecting oblique fragments of space and social performance. Painted "behind the mirror," these objects engage with a series of works in engraved and double-dyed silk velvet, created through a chemical subtraction process that literally "unweaves" traces of figures and painted marks within the textile. Among these reverse-painted and "devoured" motifs, Mauss introduces hollow heads, fixed to the wall and made of aluminum foil. These fragile, negative molds are formed from enlarged reproductions of archaic modernist heads created in the 1920s by Eyre de Lanux.
